Surfleet Shipmates
October Newsletter
There’s been a lot happening lately. In the warmth of a long hot summer, we’ve been setting up the company, receiving an amazing number of pledges, preparing for a Share Offer and proving that the Ship Inn is a viable business. We’ve also had great response to our social media posts.
See more below for a brief up date and check out our web site and social media pages for more details.
Community Support & Pledges
We have received more than 30 pledges of financial support from people locally, in Europe and in America. A huge huge thank you to everyone who’s done that. Its a fabulous start and incontrovertible proof that there the Ship can be re-floated. If you haven’t yet, you can find out more information about how to do that on our web site.
Did you know we were out in force at the Celebrate Surfleet Village fete? A great day out for all.
Setting Up the Society
After receiving professional advice from Plunkett, our advisors, the Board decided to form a Community Benefit Society. This is a special type of company limited by shares which is more advantageous for the community. The work for this is almost done and once it is, we will launch the Share Offer and start our other funding activities.
Share Offer Update
Soon, we will offer for sale shares in the new company. They will be yours to keep. Its not a donation because at some point in the future you’ll be able to redeem them if you want and get your money back. You will likely also be able to earn a bit of interest on them. Even better, you can pass them on in your will as a part of your estate, so it’s a great way to help the community and preserve your investment for your beneficiaries while in the meantime putting it to good use. All of this is strictly regulated by the Financial Control Authority.
In support of this, our work to prove the Ship Inn is a viable business is almost complete. Soon we will be arranging a meeting at the Fraiser Rooms in St Laurence’s Church, Surfleet to launch the Share Offer.
So stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the Share Offer launch day.
Did you know, losing your pub may cause local house prices to fall !!
Peer-reviewed research examining 373 local authorities across Great Britain found a positive relationship between pub numbers and house prices — and found the effect was significantly stronger in the most rural areas. What do you remember about the Ship ?
For generations, village pubs have been places where friendships are made, families meet and communities come together. The Ship has its own collection of stories.
Perhaps you remember a particular landlord, a great Sunday lunch, an evening with friends, a celebration, sitting outside by the river — or something completely different.
We’d love you to tell us your memories in the comments.
Thanks for reading and we’ll be back in touch soon with all the detail.
All the best
